The Social Care Community Partnership

Safer recruitment for social care staffing

The checks matter because the person matters. Our recruitment process considers who someone is, what they can do and whether they are suitable for the work.

Before work begins

A clear route from application to clearance.

  1. 01

    Application and pre-screen

Relevant experience, work history, preferred settings, availability and location are discussed.

  2. 02

    Identity and right to work

Required identity and right-to-work information is obtained before interview.

  3. 03

    Interview and suitability

Experience, values, communication and understanding of the work are explored.

  4. 04

    Checks and preparation

References, employment history, PVG, professional registration and relevant training are checked as required for the role.

Matched to the setting

Clearance is not the same as suitability for every role.

Relevant experience

Consider the people supported, the environment, responsibilities and level of independence required.

Role-specific requirements

Professional registration, PVG membership, training and competence depend on the role and service.

Communication and expectations

The worker needs to understand the service, the booking and the responsibilities involved.

Independent evidence

Confidence in the organisation behind the service.

Our organisation’s registered nursing service was graded 6, Excellent, for leadership and staffing in the inspection completed on 7 May 2024. This is evidence about the service assessed, not a separate grade for every social care service, worker or shift.

After placement

Recruitment standards continue in practice.

Feedback, changing requirements and ongoing compliance information help inform future placements.

Concerns are reviewed and acted on. Where appropriate, further work may be paused while suitability is considered.

Practical answers

Understanding the checks

Does every role need the same checks?

No. Identity and right to work are core requirements, while PVG, professional registration, training and other requirements depend on the role, setting and applicable responsibilities.

Can somebody work before the checks are complete?

Required recruitment and compliance checks must be completed before a suitable placement is considered. Our team will explain what is outstanding during onboarding.

Can a client add service-specific requirements?

Yes. Tell us about the setting, duties, training and experience needed so these can be considered before suitable people are discussed.

What happens if there is a concern after placement?

Tell the team promptly. We review the information, consider appropriate action and future suitability, and maintain communication with the service.
